BROKER'S COMMENTS

In 1954 the CCA rating rule, Sparkman and Stephens and ABEKING and RASMUSSEN, all three institutions in their ascendency, came together to create IMPALA, a yacht which, even in an era noted for the creation of fine boats, was considered a particular beauty.

S&S designed IMPALA in the tradition of STORMY WEATHER and others in their long line of full keel ocean racers. She is wider in the beam, both amidships and aft, than most of her sisters. On the other hand she draws only 7' 8"; less than the customary 8' to 8 1/2 '. A& R built her to a very high standard in double planked mahogany. She is flush decked with a small house aft. Her interior is approached by an off - centre companionway, with owner's cabin aft and the galley forard. IMPALA underwent a major refit in 2006

The current owner for some 22 years in a tribute to the late Olin Stephens has written

&&&I have sailed her, now a long time and a long way; and through each watch and over each mile she has protected with her strength, calmed with her simplicity, comforted with her gentle helm and inspired with her beauty.

She has charmed many more than: her crews her admirers on the dock, some vessels, who passing her at sea, go out of their way to speak to her and even a few persons who have come out from shore in their speedboats when they see her sail by. She is a lovely thing; a technical and aesthetic accomplishment that continues to astonish to this day. Thanks from me and all other admirers.

ACCOMMODATION

IMPALA is flush decked with a small house over the companionway and after cabin. She can accommodate 9 persons. Descending the companion, which is offset to starboard, is a wet locker, chart table with two chart drawers and eight drawers for tools. To port is the head with original A & R sink, Willcox - Crittenden head, and lockers for towels etc.

Forard is the main saloon with pilot berths outboard, L- shaped settee to port and straight settee to starboard and a mahoghany, gimbled, drop leaf table amidships. A Danish, Reflects type 60M, diesel heater is on the port bulkhead and its chimney exits via the head to keep that warm. Further forard are two hanging lockers and a bureau.

Beyond the saloon is the galley across the width of the boat with Eno propane stove and soapstone sink to port. The propane is carried in two 20 lb. aluminum bottles on deck behind the mast and controlled by a manual shut off valve over the cook's head. The original A& R stainless steel ice box, capacity 300 lb of ice, is to starboard. Fresh and salt water taps are supplied by foot pumps. The mainmast runs through the middle of the galley and can be useful support for the cook.

Forard of the galley is the Focsle with a pilot berth to port and a bench to starboard that can be used as an extra bunk. Theres a hanging locker and 7 drawers.

Beyond is the Forepeak; storage for ground tackle.

Aft of the companionway is the owners private cabin, with a double bunk to starboard and a single to port. It has two hanging lockers, bureau and four large drawers and three other lockers.
